Olyx uses Guardey: “Awareness is the first line of defense”

Olyx is an innovative brokerage firm that intermediates trades in the biofuel market. Manvydas Kolumba is responsible for information security at Olyx and noticed that the overall security awareness within the organization was low. He explains why the company chose Guardey and how it helps improve awareness across the organization.

Challenge: low security awareness in a busy organization

When Manvydas joined Olyx, he quickly realized there was work to be done. “Cybersecurity awareness was low,” he says. “Many people had never taken a security training.”

There was a lack of essential knowledge, like how to recognize a cyberattack or why strong passwords matter. Let alone what to do when receiving a suspicious email. The consequences of ignorance can be severe. “If someone clicks a phishing link and shares login credentials, they often have no idea what can happen next.”

Meanwhile, Olyx faced a practical challenge: the small, dynamic team is busy. “You can’t just pull people away from their daily tasks for too long,” Manvydas says. “We were looking for something that takes little time but is still effective.”

Legally, Olyx (for now) doesn’t have to comply with the NIS2 directive. Still, the company wants to hold itself to high standards. “Clients I have worked with before had to comply with ISO 27001, and I wanted to bring us closer to this level of security. It helps us instill the right habits.”

Solution: short training sessions with big impact

Manvydas looked for a suitable solution and found Guardey. What stood out to him was the combination of effectiveness and ease of use. More specifically, the weekly microlearning challenges won him over. Challenges are short training sessions that teach employees about cyber threats in a playful way. That appealed to him. “It’s a weekly routine, and people only spend a few minutes on it. That’s ideal for us.”

Guardey’s use of gamification turned out to be a perfect fit for Olyx. The company uses a leaderboard to show colleagues’ scores. “People are motivated by the leaderboard,” Manvydas says. “Some even say things like, ‘I was on top this week!’ or ‘Next time I want to score better.’”

The playful element ensures cybersecurity is now a recurring topic in the workplace. “People actually talk about phishing now. That wasn’t the case before.”

Integrating internal policies into Guardey

Guardey also offers more than a one-size-fits-all solution. Companies with more mature security practices can add their own content – custom modules covering password management, data breach behavior, or internal procedures.

Olyx is actively exploring this. “Eventually, we want to integrate our internal policies into Guardey. That way, the training is not just generic but tailored to how we work.” The goal is to embed security into the company culture. “When people understand why we do certain things, they’re much more likely to embrace change.”

Result: a shift in culture

Since Olyx started using Guardey, it has seen results in multiple areas. First, knowledge levels have improved. “Our people are much more aware of potential threats. They think twice before clicking anything.” Second, it has sparked conversations. “There’s now a real dialogue about cybersecurity within the team.”

What Manvydas values most is how Guardey supports structural behavior change. “Security is becoming part of our culture. It’s not something imposed from the top, it’s something we take responsibility for together.”

At the same time, it takes very little admin effort. “As an admin, I barely have to do anything. I can monitor progress or send a reminder, but that only takes a few minutes.” Team participation is high too. Most people actively engage. “Even those who aren’t super enthusiastic still do enough to stay involved.”

For Olyx, Guardey turned out to be the low-threshold, effective method they were looking for. The weekly challenges and motivating gamification are, according to Manvydas, the key reasons. He sums it up well: “You can’t protect what people don’t understand. Guardey helps us change that.”
