How RMI got staff to care about cybersecurity with Guardey

RMI is a logistics service provider based in the Dutch Botlek region, specializing in the transportation of chemicals, food, and liquids in bulk throughout Europe. While the company is not yet officially required to comply with the NIS2 directive, many of its customers are. “That’s why we’ve chosen to proactively start cybersecurity training now,” says Marc Hofland, IT Manager at RMI.

It was Guardey’s approach that convinced RMI. “We were looking for a training method that actually works, which led us to Guardey’s weekly training format,” says Marc.

Challenge: “Cybersecurity felt like someone else’s problem”

As a logistics player, RMI operates in high-risk environments. Transporting chemicals, food and liquids means complying with strict safety requirements — physically, and increasingly, digitally. Even though RMI is not yet required to comply with NIS2 regulations, they are already taking steps. “We also feel the pressure from our clients, who do have to comply,” says Marc.

These clients expect RMI to operate with the same level of security. And RMI is motivated to meet those expectations. “We want to be a strong link in the chain.” Since the company already adheres to strict safety standards, employees are also open to training that helps keep them alert.

Still, the IT manager encountered some initial resistance from colleagues. “At first, some looked at cybersecurity as someone else’s problem,” he recalls.

That attitude, he says, came from previous training sessions by other companies. “Those internal cybersecurity trainings weren’t effective.” They were fun, sure, but the format was: hear the presentation, check the box, and move on. “There was no lasting behavior change.”

That’s why RMI looked for an alternative — something that would truly engage employees and create lasting impact.

Solution: Weekly challenges and a bit of competition

Guardey delivered exactly what RMI was looking for. The company’s weekly nano-learnings immediately resonated with Marc. “A new challenge every week — that struck us as a powerful concept,” he says. “It keeps employees engaged without taking up too much of their time.”

But it wasn’t just about the weekly challenges. “We also really appreciate the gamification element,” he adds. “That game-like experience works really well for us. Employees can earn points, see their rankings on the leaderboard, and stay motivated to keep improving.”

RMI chose to launch the cybersecurity training through their marketing department. “We introduced Guardey during a quarterly meeting and immediately tied it to a competition.” That worked. There’s even a prize for both first and last place, in the form of a trophy. “At first, people laughed — but now they’re definitely thinking about it.”

He also points out how easy the implementation was, which he really values. “We connected Guardey to Azure AD (Entra ID).” That means new employees are automatically added to the system, and removed when they leave. “When we onboard new employees, all we have to say is: your Guardey training is ready.”

Results: Engaged conversations and sharper focus

The results? They speak for themselves, according to Marc. “Our employees are noticeably more aware of cybersecurity.” That makes the IT Manager happy. “They’re more alert now — they pay closer attention to email content and are less likely to click.” In fact, employees are hardly clicking on phishing test emails anymore, even the ones he puts extra effort into crafting.
